24 March World TB Day
24 March World TB Day
Tuberculosis continues to be a global threat to humanity.
It is one of the 10 leading killers: 1.3 million people die from tuberculosis a year worldwide. According to experts, more than a quarter of the world's population is infected with TB and in unfavorable life situations this population group has a very high risk of falling ill with tuberculosis.
WHO, together with the Global Fund and the Stop TB Partnership, are implementing the “Find, Treat All, End TB” Initiative.
On March 18, 2020, on the eve of World Tuberculosis Day, Director of the National Medical Research Center for Phthisiopulmonology and Infectious Diseases, WHO expert on tuberculosis from the Russian Federation, President of the Russian Society of Phthisiatricians and the Association of Phthisiatricians, MD, Professor I.A. Vasilyeva gave an interview to a magazine "Medical Newspaper".
In it, Irina Vasilyeva defined the goals and objectives in the fight against tuberculosis in Russia: “... Our goal is to minimize the incidence of tuberculosis so that it does not exceed 10 cases per 100 thousand population. So far, we have 41. This means that it needs to be reduced by 4 times. And mortality in general should not be a single case, it simply cannot be allowed.
Tuberculosis is preventable. All people must be healed. These are our tasks.
Today we know a lot about the nature of tuberculosis infection. Many vigorous and effective measures have already been implemented.
But life presents more and more challenges, so even more efforts have to be made. There is a lot of work ahead… ”.
To achieve the set goals and objectives, it is necessary to unite the efforts of civil society organizations, health care institutions, communities affected by the challenges of tuberculosis, national and international partners.
Together we will defeat tuberculosis!
